Ren'Py 8.5 changes

This page is part of the GenPy Ren'Py learning path. It focuses on practical Ren'Py 8.x production and links each concept back to the GenPy workflow.

Learning goals

  • Know which 8.5 changes affect project code.
  • Read incompatible changes before upgrading SDKs.
  • Lint and test save/load after migration.

Core syntax

  • Ren'Py 8.5
  • Live2D Web
  • automated testing
  • screen indentation
  • before_load

Runnable example

text
# chapter_1_part_1.rpy
label chapter_1:
label chapter_1.part_1:
    # ...

# chapter_1_part_2.rpy
label chapter_1.part_2:
    # ...

Study outline

  • The official latest/download page and release list currently identify Ren'Py 8.5.3 as the latest released SDK.
  • Ren'Py 8.5.0 added Live2D Web support, automated testing, relaxed local labels, Unicode 17 support, GUI default behavior changes, and removal of the standalone pygame_sdl2 dependency.
  • Ren'Py 8.5.3 requires Live2D 5.3 when Live2D is used, treats stores as Python packages, and improves parse error reporting.
  • The official changelog already contains an 8.5.4 note for Live2D Bezier compatibility. Check old_beziers or config.live2d_old_beziers if an older project depends on the previous curve behavior.
  • Read incompatible changes, run Lint, and test save/load before moving a production project to a newer SDK.

Common pitfalls

  • Read the incompatible changes page before upgrading production projects.
  • Back up projects and saves before changing SDK versions.
  • Test the smallest working script before layering on visual or UI complexity.
  • Run Ren'Py Lint before release builds, even when the script appears to run locally.
  • Keep examples in standard .rpy files so they remain editable outside GenPy.

How this fits in GenPy

  • Use GenPy Validation after importing or upgrading projects.
  • Use Export only after testing the same target Ren'Py version locally.
